Farmhouse Finds That Will Have You Feeling HomeGoods Happy

As a designer I find myself wandering the aisles of HomeGoods quite often, whether it be shopping for a client or finding just the right piece for my own home. Okay, okay, we’re all friends here so I’ll admit… I’m there so often that I know many of the staff by name and I get the subtle wave from the cashiers when I walk in. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or if they’re secretly thinking “oh, it’s her again.” It’s pretty much a weekly shopping extravaganza, because I just never know what I might find. And that’s the reason why I love HomeGoods so much- their inventory is always changing and you can get the “designer look” on any budget.

Although HomeGoods appeals to a variety of styles, lately during my trips I’ve started to notice more of style that has sprinkled itself amongst HomeGoods’ shelves. The items from this style just so happens to speak right to my heart and fit right into my home- FARMHOUSE. Some items even have tags marked VINTAGE. WHAT? Yes, you just read that HomeGoods is now offering found vintage items. Meaning you can find “one of a kind” authentically found items right there on the shelves of your local HomeGoods store. Items such as these are my absolute favorite to incorporate into a room. Just like this farm crate I scored on this shopping trip.

Come on and hop right into my cart, because I’m taking you along on my most recent shopping trip and sharing the WHOLE design process. While circling the aisles of HomeGoods I look for unique items that add interest, texture, and a story to the space I’m shopping for. For this trip I’m shopping for my living room, because after I took all my Christmas decor away, it was looking a little down and sad. Before I even step foot into the store I get a game plan together. Nothing too precise, because having a preconceived notion of how you want your space to look can hinder your creative juices while shopping at HomeGoods. Because unlike other stores the inventory is constantly changing and a lot of stuff is one-of, which makes it easy to be creative and come up with a truly one of a kind look for your space.

I stick with the basics when I plan- I knew for my space I wanted to add some subtle pops of color, warm it up with some neutral textures, and find something to go beside my fireplace. See there, pretty basic. First thing that caught my eye and hopped right into my cart is this vintage inspired print blue rug. I wanted a pop of color and this was it. This rug was in the small rug section where they’re rolled up on the shelf. I like to visualize the pattern and texture of a rug before I decide to purchase. So right there in the middle of the store I unrolled it and plopped that baby right on the floor.

Next I found that vintage farm crate I mentioned earlier AND a super amazing vintage inspired trunk. As someone who deals in the vintage and antique market I could not believe my eyes when I found that trunk- talk about a statement piece that tells a story. I knew right then it would be the perfect coffee table for my space. I love using nontraditional items for furniture pieces. It gives your home a more collected look. Now to find something for beside my fireplace. My living room only has one ceiling fixture for lighting, so it tends to be a little dark at night. For that reason anytime I can incorporate additional lighting its a win. So when I found an over-sized black swing arm floor lamp I knew it would be perfect.

Now that I have found a couple of statement pieces, it’s time to find some accessory decor. I call accessory decor all the little decor pieces that pull a design together. I found a black plant stand with a beautiful faux fern, some vintage inspired clay pots, and some amazing textured neutral pillows. Don’t be afraid to dig! I found vintage inspired clay pots on the very back of a shelf.

Two buggies and a couple trips to the car I loaded everything up and headed home to style my new space- my favorite part! And now you get to see how I pulled all of my finds together.

I am absolutely in love with how this space came together. It is the perfect transitional style from Christmas to spring that reads MODERN FARMHOUSE. I played along and layered on top of my existing neutral palette while adding touches of blue with the rug, and pops of green with both faux and live plants. I use black metal accents throughout my home so the black swing arm lamp and black plant stand matched perfectly and really popped against my white fireplace.

The pillows and trunk added just the right amount of texture and interest to the space. Can I just say again how amazing this trunk is! I mean look at that handle. What’s also nice about this piece is that it opens up and doubles as storage. Also don’t be afraid to pull in some decor pieces you already have like I did with vintage books.

This true vintage farm crate goes so well with this space. It holds extra pillows and blankets all while adding to the design of the space. (See that yummy textured pillo i scored?!) The raw wood adds warmth and the black lettering ties into the black accents used throughout my home. It also does a good job of filling some dead space on my fireplace to create balance.

I took the vintage inspired clay pots I found and planted some house plants. Then I layered the pot and plant among some books for my mantel. Plants are always a good way to make a space feel lived in and welcoming. And these pots really help keep with the farmhouse look.

I have been on the hunt for a Turkish Kilim rug for what seems like forever. But every single one I find is in a vibrant color that just does’t work for my home. Or I find the perfect muted blue and it’s $5,000. So I can not express my excitement when I found this vintage inspired one for less than $60. It added so much interest to my space layered over my large jute rug.
